                                              At present, LCD (liquid crystal display) and OLED (organic light-emitting diode display) is the display panel of the two schools. In order to compete with OLED, LCD used in the quantum dot technology to enhance the LCD color saturation. However, recently there is a new technology called QLED very hot, but also caused more confusion.
                                  QLED details have not yet been fully disclosed. However, IHS believes that QLED "Q" on behalf of quantum dots (Quantum Dot) under the conditions of two kinds of technology are QLED possible. The first possibility is AMOLED TV panel of advanced technology, that is, with quantum dots material to replace the organic light-emitting layer. The second possibility is the LCD panel with an advanced version of the LED backlight, the use of quantum dots as a color filter (Color Filter) material. While the panel light source is still using LED backlight.
                                  In other words, in order to enhance color saturation, LCD in the backlight part of the quantum dot technology; and OLED can also use quantum dot technology to enhance the luminous efficiency.
                                  In the first way, the AMOLED type will be a completely self-luminous display, which requires a higher electron mobility than conventional LCD TFTs (liquid crystal thin film transistors). Therefore, the current low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) or oxide (oxide) semiconductor array substrate will replace the traditional TFT backplane. The advantage is that investment costs may be lower than AMOLED.
                                  The second way is to use quantum dots to replace the color film layer of the LCD, the structure and similar to the traditional LCD. It will have the same amorphous silicon TFT, liquid crystal and glass substrate. The only difference is that the color film layer uses quantum dots instead of dyed material. Therefore, it can be produced in the traditional LCD factory, so that equipment transformation and investment can be minimized. At the same time, its color saturation is excellent because of the characteristics of quantum dots.
                                  The second way to invest less, low cost, and the panel picture quality is good, because the color saturation and high contrast. While the first way to produce higher costs. Therefore, the use of quantum dots instead of color film LCD advanced version seems to be closer to IHS speculation is more likely to develop QLED.
                                   But QLED still has many technical development obstacles. The current quantum dot material has not been fully validated for the replacement of the color film layer, and in the new display panel IHS believes that the optimized quantum dot structure has not yet reached the situation that can be placed into the panel Open Cell. The polarizer in the LCD panel must also be aware that the top polarizer needs to be placed underneath the quantum dot layer, inside the LCD panel, rather than above.
                                   For QLED, the embedded polarizer is a necessary condition because it is a so-called LCD advanced version with a quantum dot color film. IHS believes that this will become another major obstacle in the development of QLED process, but also said that the successful development of the panel manufacturers will have a great technological lead.
